Description
Allen key
An allen key is a tool shaped like an “L” made from a hexagonal rod, designed to insert into screws or bolts that have a hexagonal socket in the head.
It’s commonly used in furniture assembly, bike maintenance, machinery, electronics, and many types of equipment because internal-hex screws provide a secure hold and clean look.
Key Features to Look For
When choosing an allen key or a set, consider these features:
-
Material & finish: Look for hardened steel or chrome-vanadium material for durability.
-
Size range: A good set will cover a range of sizes (metric mm or SAE/inch) so you’re equipped for different screws.
-
L-shape vs short/long arms: The long arm gives reach, the short arm gives leverage. Choose a set where you can access tight spots or get good torque.
-
Ball-end / angled tip option: Some keys offer a “ball end” which lets you enter the socket at an angle — useful in tight or awkward positions. For example, one set lists “BALL END HEX 10PC 3MM‐17MM”.
-
Holder / case: Sets that come in a roll, plastic holder or ring help keep the keys organised and easy to pick the right size.
-
Clear size markings: Helps quickly identify the size you need; saves time and prevents damage to screws.
-
Finish for corrosion resistance: If you work outdoors or in humid conditions, a black oxide, nickel or chrome finish is beneficial.
-
Quality tolerances: The fit between key and screw socket should be tight to avoid rounding off the screw head. According to standards, the keys have precise dimension tolerance.
